This Video "Say Cheese" is a fantastic way to get students comfortable with improvisation, getting themselves acquainted with their creative side, and composition. For this exercise I would play the video through from start to finish without any sound allowing the students to get familiar with the video. Then, I would explain that they will have to compose the sound track to this video using what every sounds they fell appropriately suit the video. Students will form groups of 3-5, make sure every student is included and has a group. Also, allow students to use any instruments or objects in the room to aid them in their composition. I would then play the video a few more times ensuring each group has a good grasp on the video and task at hand. If students are feeling overwhelmed or at a lost of ideas get them to watch the video in closer detail writing down any possible sound or noise that would occur as the video is playing. I would then play the video another time and ask students to play their group compositions while the video is playing, allowing students to see how their composition fits in with the video and to see if any other ideas arise. I would play the video a few more times, giving each group a chance to finalize their compositions. To finish this activity, I would ask every group to present their compositions in front of their fellow classmates. This allows every student to see the different ideas and compositions that came out form watching this video. On a finale note, I would pay the video one last time through with the sound allowing students to see what the original composer of this short film decided to do.
*Supplementary material: You could even discuss with the class what they found interesting about the video. |
